Class One - Pros & Cons of Computer Technology & Introduction to Privacy Issues
1/20/2004

This class will cover material from chapter 1 and some of chapter 2 in the text.

The focus of this class will be to itemize some of the ways that computer technology has been beneficial to society. This is a prerequisite to weighing the pros & cons successfully when looking at case studies where this technology or the ease of gathering information may be used in a way that is considered detrimental. During class we will try to enumerate many of the benefits of computer technology, and break up into small groups to prepare in-class presentations on one of several case studies related to chapters 1 and 2. As we discuss these cases, and as we continue throughout the semester, we will try to gain perspective and consider the motivations behind various technologies and the direction that technology is taking in society to get a high level view of trends and potential impact down the road of both new and existing technologies.
